Francistown to host BOMaid bowling championships

The championships, sponsored to the tune of P20, 000 by the medical aid society, will be held from tomorrow and continue for the whole week in Francistown. The championship, pioneered by Jacqui and Derek Rhodes in 1976, is the most prestigious annual event on the BBA calendar.  Apparently, the trophy was named after the Rhodes family as the founders of the Botswana national championships.

Hence, BBA spokesperson, John Gaborutwe told Mmegi Sport Gaborutwe said, the ultimate prize for the championship is the Rhodes trophy for the club that wins the overall tournament. 'Gaborone Club has the majority of Rhodes trophy titles with a record of 16 wins followed by Francistown club, Phikwe and the now defunct Lobatse with six titles each.  'Jwaneng has three titles, while Orapa has only won the tournament twice,' said Gaborutwe.

He noted that traditionally every bowling nation has its annual competitions to determine champions in the various disciplines of pairs, singles, triples and four's categories. The winners of both ladies' and men's singles championship qualify for the annual World Champion of Champions' tournament whose dates and venues are still to be announced.

He explained that last year BOMaid sponsored the BOmaid national championships and Botswana Bowling Masters for P15, 000 each.
