SPEDU marketing and communications manager, Kenneth Boikhutshwane has explained it is normal that when a government organisation goes private, it is run by an interim board for sometime. He said that it takes time for a permanent board to be appointed. He said a new board is expected to be announced this month.

The interim board comprises of Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Banny Molosiwa (chairperson), BCL Mine general manager, Daniel Mahupela (vice chairperson), Mompati Seleka, PalalaniMoitlhobogi, Boeditswe Masilo, Simon Pule, Johannes Brink, Willeminah Baipidi-Maje and Ontlametse Ward. The transfer of SPEDU to private hands is part of the rationalisation process that the government is undertaking to improve operational efficiencies.

SPEDU has been mandated to secure the long-term economic viability of Selebi-Phikwe and the surrounding areas beyond the closure of BCL Mine and smelter. It aims to do this through economic development and regeneration of the Selebi-Phikwe region, promotion of business efficiency and competitiveness, and promotion of inward investment and trade facilitation.  SPEDU is tasked with promoting employment creation and enhancing the development and application of skills relevant to the industry in the region.
