Tanian, the only volleyball side based in Serowe, went into Saturday's match on the back of eight losses and they could not afford to continue with their losing streak.Stone Mekgwe and his charges finally got it right. Mekgwe executed some tactical proficiency, and his boys implemented the instructions and got the better of the visiting Lobatse-based outfit to emerge the winners of the game.
The former Tanian blocker infused the new blood and experience; and this worked for him seeing how the young boys produced some good play. Young boys like Maratho Mothusi and Tiroyamodimo Seakanyeng were on top of the game- much to the delight of their head coach.Mekgwe decided to scout for talented volleyball players from junior and senior schools in Serowe following reports of indiscipline and lack of commitment among the club's senior players. The decision proved to be what the doctor had prescribed. Some of the senior players are reportedly now forced to attend training schedule in order to maintain their positions at the club.
Tanian head coach was happy with the performance displayed by his team. He confirmed that the improved performance was a result of the disciplinary changes that he has been making in his team of late. In the build up to the last weekend's games, Mekgwe said most of the players were attending training as expected. With the weekend game, Tanian has moved up to 13th position on the 14-team log table.'90 percent of my squad attended training prior to the last weekend's games,' said an excited Mekgwe.Mekgwe said it was not easy to take some drastic measures at the club. But he risked losing the first games of the season because he wanted to transform the club into one of the formidable sides in the ongoing 2013 Mascom Men's Volleyball League. He said: 'I am happy that results are beginning to show.' Mekgwe said he plans to start the second round of the ongoing season on a high, hence preparing a solid squad.
For his part, Victory Seekers head coach Boitumelo Kgosi Jannie blamed his players for not coordinating well. He said the boys failed to build just a single attack throughout the game.'Tanian has been struggling. But they were a different side over the weekend. And we could not beat them because our boys failed to rise to the occasion,' said Jannie. Victory Seekers are currently rooted at the bottom of the log.
