Limkokwing re-opens

In a statement, LUCT spokesperson, Mercy Thebe said end of semester activities have resumed at the institution.  The activities include final semester presentations, final assignments submissions, winter semester students' events and processing of applications for the July 2013 intake. On Monday, Thebe announced that the university management had decided to suspend all student activity 'indefinitely until further notice' due to acts of violence.  The violence led to the arrest of some of the students.  Thebe said the students attempted arson twice, vandalised property and committed acts of violence against university staff and the police who were called to disperse them.

The decision to suspend activities was taken to ensure public safety and prevention of damage to university facilities and equipment. The disturbance at LUCT followed months of wrangling between management and students who were unhappy with the campus bookstore. The students wanted to be given their book allowances to purchase books at a store of their choice. Mass boycotts earlier in the year led to the closure of the university and suspension of some students. After the latest disturbances, Student Representative Council president, Poloko Pitwane, who is on suspension along with 12 others, was arrested and arraigned in court.
