Fire expo enlightens residents

CDC's senior public relations officer, Oaitse Serite, said in an interview that the expos were arranged to educate people on the dangers that can cause fire, how to respond to a fire, understanding fire prevention and how to practice good housekeeping with regard to fire prevention.

Serite said the expos were inspired by a significant number of accidental fires reported over the last few years. 'In addition to the high incidents of fire in the district, the absence of adequate fire coverage throughout CDC was also taken into consideration. A decision was made to execute the activity namely, Fire Expo 2013 to conduct a series of fire prevention and awareness education throughout CDC's sub-districts,' said Serite.

She confirmed that since the expo was rolled out, community response has been positive, with a clear indication that they are very receptive to the information disseminated. She said: 'It was evident that there was hunger for fire prevention and safety education. An overwhelming request by the community was made in the seven Sub Districts for the event to be held annually.'

The parts of the CDC that are mostly affected by fires are the district headquarters and surrounding areas including; Palapye, Serowe and Mahalapye, Tutume, Tonota, and Letlhakane. The department further informed this paper that the above mentioned areas are densely vegetated and are consequently considered high risk areas.
