Sefalana robbery puzzles police

Police Detective Assistant Superintendent, Movel Langa, told Mmegi that it is surprising the criminals got inside the shop without the knowledge of the guard. He doubted the guard's claims that he did not hear the sound of the powerful explosives the thieves used to blast three cash boxes.

Langa revealed that they have not made any headway in efforts to arrest culprits. He pleaded with members of the public to assist them with information that could lead to the arrests of the suspects. He said they are yet to establish the type of explosives used in the robbery. The police have not received any reports from companies complaining about the disappearance of explosives.

Langa expressed concern by the seeming ease with which people can acquire explosives. He warned that it is an offence to be in possession of explosives without a licence. He is disappointed that members of the public are not forthcoming with information about crime even when they have it.

He stated that explosives were used to rob Tutume government revenue office on Thursday night when criminals got away with P500,000. He explained that had the security guard been visible, he could have scared the criminals away. He advised business people to always check their premises at night to make sure that the security guards have not vacated their posts.

'Security companies must also increase the number of guards at one post because the possibility of two people sleeping is low compared to when a person is alone. The police are concentrating on patrolling and we cannot be expected to guard premises because our resources do not allow us,' said Langa. He stated that the most effective security measure is guards because criminals can easily interfere with alarm systems.
