Gabonamong in new Supersport contract talks

The former Engen Santos star's contract with Matsatsantsa a Pitori comes to an end next month and, in recent months, mounting speculation has linked him to Moroka Swallows and Amazulu. He confirmed to Mmegi Sport that he was holding out for an improved deal after the club expressed interest in extending his stay.Despite strong interest from Swallows and Usuthu, the Zebras' midfield star explained that he was still looking to come to an agreement with SuperSport.

'I would love to stay at SuperSport - it's a good team with great ambitions. They always buy good players and prepare well. But at my age I cannot settle for any contract, I need to agree on a deal that I will be happy with,' Gabonamong said. Gabonamong struggled to land a regular place in SuperSport's starting line-up at the beginning of the season, but struck a rich vein of form towards the end. His turning point was when he broke SuperSport's run of draws in February as he fired them to a 1-0 win over University of Pretoria. Gabonamong said he would weigh other offers this week. 'I still need to meet a couple of people this week. There are two or three clubs that are interested, but I will give my current club first priority. I'm meeting them (SuperSport) this week to discuss a new contract,' Gabonamong said.

He denied rumours that he was headed for Moroka Swallows. Reports in the South African media a few months ago were that he penned a pre-contract with Swallows. 'Those were just rumours - Swallows have not even spoken to me.' Gabonamong believes his club could have done much better this season. SuperSport finished in sixth place in the ABSA Premiership and lost 1-0 in the Nedbank Cup final to Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday.'I feel we did not do very well. We didn't start too well, but we will learn from our mistakes. We have a very good team but I think we let ourselves down,' he said.

Meanwhile, Gabonamong is expected to join national team camp ahead of the international friendly against Egypt next week.Zebras' coach Stanley Tshosane had to push the camp forward to today after players delayed to report camp. Tshosane said he expects all his South Africa-based players in camp this morning. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) based trio of Dirang Moloi, Phenyo Mongala and Jerome Ramatlhakwana are also expected to join the rest of the team.
