Malunga attributes success to hard work

 

Malunga was one of the people who came out victorious at the Botswana Karate Association (BOKA) Senior Championships held in Gaborone on Saturday.

Malunga has also expressed her desire to be the world champion one day. She aspires to be a chief instructor when she retires from her favourite sport.

Malunga won the women's individual kata, beating Tsholofelo Maduma to the gold.

She is also the champion in the women's under 55 kilograms individual kumite category beating Tuelo Iketleng who got a silver medal. Ofentse Bakwadi was the only other athlete who scooped gold both in individual kata.

Bakwadi beat Kankutsho Metswi to the gold medal in the individual kata.  There were only four karatekas who competed in individual kata. Kumite seemed to be popular among spectators as evidenced by the crowd that witnessed some of the interesting battles. Baone Radiposo scooped a gold medal in the women's Under-50 kilograms while Getty Malele came second.  Tsholofelo Maduma redeemed herself after being defeated by Malunga in the women's individual kata to walk away with a gold medal in kumite, defeating Martha Motsamai in the Under 61 kilograms.

Jerileigh Du Preez was the under 68 champion while Segametsi Chaloba came second. Chedza Mkabi was declared the winner, as she had no competitor in the women's over 68 kilograms category. Vicky Majama beat One Ntalagwe to the gold medal in the men's Under 60 kilograms category. Bose Caiphus was the under 67 champion whereas Oarabile Dambe was the silver medallist. In the under 75, Oratile Caiphus came first and Mpho Bosenakitso was the second best. Kaene Kago is the champion in the Under 84 kilograms category with Molefe Molemi as runner-up. The next event on the karate calendar will be the Junior Championships on February 23.
