Intervarsity games get underway

 

He also said that with the theme for this year's games being 'Development through sports and cultural activities,' it is upon the students to relate and share their cultures and experiences through the games.

He urged the participants to exhibit good sportsmanship and accept defeat because 'there can only be one winner'.
Speaking for the UB leadership, Lydia Ramahobo concurred with the minister saying that over the years, the games have promoted cultural exchanges and friendship. She also revealed that this year, swimming and aerobics have come on board.

Last year saw the addition of rugby and squash to the growing list of intervarsity sports. Ramahobo however added that the games need to be revamped. She pointed out that they need to seek partnership with the public as well as the private sector.

'We have started doing that with Mascom, AT & T Monnakgotla as well as Maitisong,' she said.

Though there were no results at the of time going to press soccer, volleyball, swimming, netball, snooker, track and field competitions, boxing, softball, table tennis and tennis were in progress yesterday.

Gaborone Central legislator Dumelang Saleshando and Sports and Recreation director Falcon Sedimo were among dignitaries who attended the event yesterday.
The presidents of the three institutions were also unanimous that this is the opportunity for all the participants to interact and compete. 

The games are held on a rotational basis and are expected to end this Friday.
