Debswana is stepping up celebrations for its 55th anniversary, with a campaign focussed on how the decades of mining have impacted the lives of Batswana and lifted the economy to where it can transform further.

Rather than a one day celebration, Debswana has chosen a three-month campaign for its 55th, which will be anchored on story-telling by employees and other stakeholders on how the diamond company has touched their lives.

The anniversary’s theme is “More than Diamond Mining,” which Minerals and Energy minister, Lefoko Moagi, said points to the transformational role Debswana has played in the development of modern Botswana, beyond mining activities.

“Our diamonds are not just gems but the foundation on which the hope and promises of our economy have been built,” he said earlier today at celebrations held at Debswana’s Corporate Centre. “Debswana has singlehandedly anchored the transformation of this country since Independence.”

Moagi added that the focus in both Debswana and the broader economy was now on sustainability, which involves ensuring providing an enduring value distribution towards other economic activities.

“Hence the importance of the theme of these celebrations “More than Diamond Mining,” he said. “I’m happy to note that we are investing in Debswana’s expansion through the Jwaneng Underground and Orapa Cut 3 which promise more employment creation.”

Moagi, a mining engineer and former Debswana employee, urged the diamond company to continue its “rigorous” training of workers and enhancement of citizen skills, saying this was a legacy that had stood Botswana in good stead.

For his part, Debswana managing director, Andrew Motsomi, said through the celebrations, the company was making clear that its impact in the country and beyond was not limited to “unearthing gems”.

“It’s about enriching the lives of our people and the country,” he said. “Drawing from the last 55 years, we must remember the great responsibility we have, which is to continue to make life brilliant for the next 55 years.”

Motsomi said the celebrations this year would focus on story-telling by those who have been impacted by Debswana’s activities over the years.

“Everyone has a unique diamond story of their lived experienced. “I believe we cannot successfully showcase the story of Debswana without sharing your stories. “We are all Debswana and Debswana is all of us.”

At the celebrations today, various employees took turns to tell trace their careers through Debswana, using anecdotes to share their experiences in the professional, family and fun side of the diamond company.

We should care more for our infrastructure, road safety

These roads, which are vital conduits for trade and tourism, have long been in dire need of repair. However, while this development is undoubtedly a positive step, it also raises questions about broader issues of infrastructural management and road safety that deserve closer scrutiny. The A3 and A33 roads are not just any roads, they are critical arteries that connect Botswana to its neighbours and facilitate the movement of goods and people...
