Grain prices double on drought effects

The Botswana Agricultural Marketing Board (BAMB) says the two fold price jump in grains will be passed on to consumers within coming weeks. BAMB marketing manager, Thabo Seitshiro said grains, like all other commodities, are affected by the laws of supply and demand. He noted that drought in the southern part of Africa affected crop production especially the maize crop.

He said the maize prices have more than doubled from the previous year, which will ultimately lead to the rise in food prices.

“Food prices will also rise as a result of these rising grain prices. The final consumer will find it more expensive at retail shelf to buy maize-meal and sorghum meal,” Seitshiro said.
