The upcoming International Bikwe, Hike which will take place in the greater Gaborone on May 25, is set to be a transformative event for locals and international hikers alike.

With a focus on promoting a healthier lifestyle and connecting individuals with the natural beauty of the region, this hike offers a unique opportunity for people of all fitness levels to come together and enjoy the great outdoors.

Organised by two young visionaries from Manyana ward, Kagisanyo Moagi and Thuso Mokokwe, the Bikwe Hike will showcase a 42km trail that winds its way through the stunning landscapes of the greater Gaborone. From the tranquil B111 highway of Boatle to Mmankgodi, hikers will have the chance to explore valleys, water sources, and the majestic Manyelanong west hill, offering a truly immersive experience in nature.

“One of the highlights of the event is the participation of Prof. Kgeti Phakeng, a renowned businesswoman and former Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Town. With experience summiting Mt Kilimanjaro and other peaks in Southern Africa, Prof. Phakeng will add a touch of inspiration to the hike as she joins over 800 international hikers in climbing the second highest hill in the greater Gaborone area,” explained Mokokwe in an interview. Mokokwe highlighted that the event is not just about physical activity; it is also a platform for brand activation and community engagement.

He said by involving local and international organisations, corporate entities and government institutions, the event aims to create a sense of camaraderie and goodwill among participants. Mokokwe stated that brands have the opportunity to increase visibility, connect with consumers, and contribute to the overall success of the hike.

“With a focus on promoting health, adventure, and connection, the Bikwe Hike is poised to become a cornerstone event for the branding of the village of Bikwe in the greater Gaborone. As more people participate in the hike each year, the organisers hope to create a lasting impact on the community and inspire others to embrace a more active and fulfilling lifestyle,” stated Mokokwe.

He further emphasised that the International Bikwe Hike offers a perfect blend of health, adventure, and community spirit. He said with the support of local and international participants, this event has the potential to become a highlight on the calendar of hikers and outdoor enthusiasts in Botswana and beyond.
