He creates portrait drawings primarily with charcoal and graphite pencils on paper.
In an interview with Arts&Culture, he explained that he had always been fascinated by the way art captures the beauty and complexities of life. Gaumakwe also said he was inspired to start drawing by seeing the work of other artists and by wanting to express his thoughts and feelings through art. “I am a self-taught artist.
I have not learned art anywhere. I chose art because it is the best way for me to express myself and connect with the world around me. I have a wide range of reactions from the public. People who feel deeply moved by my work to those who see it as purely decorative.
My memorable art piece is the one I did of Miss Botswana 2021/2022 Palesa Molefe because is the most liked and it increased my following and I also had the chance to meet up with her in person,” he said. Furthermore, Gaumakwe emphasised that he is proud of the personal growth and development he experienced over the years.
He pointed out that he managed to reach out to a lot of people through his art including the international market. As he continues to grow, Gaumakwe hopes to have his work featured in more galleries and exhibitions and also connect with more people. He explained that as a full-time artist, he has devoted his time to creating artwork to enrich his catalog and refresh his mind.
His advice to aspiring artists is to stay true to themselves and their vision to not compare themselves to others or try to fit into a mold and most importantly, make sure they are doing it for the right reasons. “Do it because you love it, not because you want to be famous or make money. I would like to thank everyone who has been with me throughout my art journey, your support means a lot to me,” he ended. On other issues, Gaumakwe said just like any other artist, his challenges include a lack of resources and self doubt.
