Most such events are all about the glitz and glamour where many celebs showcase their personalities via their elegant outfits. But that has not been the case locally.
However, the orgnaisers of the newly formed Annual Glitz Awards of BW Celebrities have vowed to change the face of the awards in Botswana by bringing an event that will appreciate and acknowledge local celebrities. In an interview with the event chairperson, Dickson Gothaaang said the inspiration to host the awards came from the fact that there were numerous awards held in the country but they did recognised through such occassions.
He added that the awards were only targeting celebrities in the music industry, so the Glitz awards of BW Celebrities saw that gap and made sure that all categories are covered such as fashionable trendsetter, best comedian, best dressed couple and others. He explained that it was important to host those awards for the purpose of inclusiveness.
“Glitz Awards of BW Celebrities targets all people of all ages. We have a category whereby we recognize upcoming talent. The reason being that each and every celebrity no matter his or her age can meet the above mentioned criterion. We include all celebrities including the likes of BJB, Vusi, O Ske Bora Teachere and others because there is no discrimination in Glitz Awards of BW Celebs,” he emphasized.
Even though he acknowledged that there were many celebrity awards locally, he said theirs was unique because it has 40 catergories including for people living with disabilities and for gender based violence (GBV) activists. He added that one should be proud to be nominated in their awards because this year on top of the unique decorated trophy there was monetary incentive included.
Gothaang pointed out that they face lack of sponsorship even from the government. He explained that they hosted the awards last year for the first time and this year they will be running for the second time. He promised that this year's awards would be bigger adding that preparations were already at an advanced stage.
“In the previous event, we had ups and downs especially concerning the date, we postponed the awards twice due to unavailability of sponsorships. However, we started our preparations early this year with inaugural workshop empower Glitz awards employees on what is expected to hold successful awards. We expect most gliterous, glamorous, awarding and eventful awards ever to held in Botswana featuring both local and international artists," he added.
While the political shift brings hope for change, it also places immense pressure on the new administration to deliver on its election promises in the face of serious economic challenges. On another level, newly appointed Finance Minister Ndaba Gaolathe’s grim assessment of the country’s finances adds urgency to the moment.
