Local contemporary Folk and Jazz band, Sereetsi & The Natives, is the lead act for the inaugural Basiko Cultural Festival.

The event will be held on September 30 at Two Nine Farm in Kopong. It is organised by local events management company, Green Carpet Events. The event is aimed at promoting the culture of the Basiko tribe of Kopong and celebrate the Tswana culture on independence holidays.

The award winning Sereetsi & The Natives, will also be making a debut performance in the village located just under 30km north of Gaborone. There is some bit of excitement over the musician’s anticipated performance as he is described as a cultural icon better suited for the theme of the event.

“This year we will be headlining with Sereetsi & The Natives to boost the image of the event and we will add some local traditional music acts and poets to the line-up,” Mafhikeng Ncapedi of Green Carpet Events told Arts & Culture this week.

The organisers of the event have selected Kopong Kgosi Michael Molefe as the event ambassador. Proceeds from the event will be used for a ‘Go-Green’ campaign in the area. “The year 2022 saw us leading the community on a litter picking campaign with the help of the Lentsweletau Environmental Health and the village chief, Michael Molefe.

The move was to motivate one of our core aims ‘Go Green’ that focuses much on improving aesthetics of the environment. We also hope to establish a trust fund for our village (Kopong) from proceeds of the event,” Ncapedi said. Tickets for the 2023 Basiko Cultural Festival sell for P100 adults and P50 for kids. The early bird special is P150 for a double ticket.
