Eighteen-year-old Kgosietsile Kooagile from Mmadinare recently published a book titled, Shattering Shackles. Kooagile, whose pen name is The Poetic Genius, is also a Christian poet. In an interview with Arts & Culture, the author explained that he went through life's challenges and engaged with themes of love, loss, feminism and most importantly, spirituality.

He added that he thought of sharing part of it with the world as a way of stimulating healing, love, and progressive movement.

The book consists of 139 pages and 10 chapters. Each chapter serves a different purpose and deals with a different pain. Poeticblood Publishers published it last week. He explained that the book was a poetry collection with poems that embody a motion that is unpredictable.

“It has a linguistic and spiritual resonances that open doors of the sublime, not only that, it also has a versatile approach to it which goes from expressing the highs of being fond of Christ to descriptions of relationships that are both draining and life giving, disappointments and challenges faced as I was evolving in life's odyssey,” he stated.

Furthermore, he said the title of the book ‘Shattering Shackles was wholly inspired by the Bible verse from 2 Corinthians 3: ‭17‬-‭18. He also pointed out that the scripture embarked them to embrace the essence of liberation from their personal bondage. He said shackles were a restraint in their lives saying they restrict individuals from being immaculate.

He also noted that the scripture complimented the book title perfectly in a way that it tells them to embrace the essence of liberation from their personal bondage, which can only be achieved by allowing the spirit of the Lord to abide in them. Since the book talks about faith, he said faith was the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

“The depth of my penmanship when writing this book was influenced by the works of the Late Maya Angelou, Lebo Mashile, William Shakespeare and Katlego Molebatsi. They contributed to my diction and wordplay. The experiences faced when l wrote this book were the incentives that made me complete the book. My target audience is the world as a whole. There are a lot of things that even our parents still have engraved deep within their hearts of which only they are in reach of,” he said.

He further pointed out that his poetry collection was to reach out to the world whether young or old for its main role was to induce healing, love and light to the heavy hearted to see themselves as worth it and still deserving of a lot they lost in life due to their personal bondage that they could not be liberated from. He therefore stated that Shattering Shackles was there to induce healing, love and light to all.

Moreover, he pointed out that his readers described Shattering Shackles as the next big thing in the lines of poetry. He added that due to the unspeakable and unpredictable twist of events it carries, it strikes pain, healing, love, and light to the readers. He said they find the book’s title as the most striking about the collection, what inspired it as well as the book cover for it all screams 'Serenity.'

“They attest that this book has taken them through their most darkest moments right into a state of light and healing. Above all, writing this collection was not a walk in the park. Usually; I hear a lot of writer's saying they encountered a 'writer's block.' I never really thought it was a thing, but that was until it happened to me. Penning my poems down had me going through a lot of burnouts because I would feel a whole wave of ideas in my head, but unleashing them was the problem as I was going through my rough patches. The story changed with time as I used my adversity to help others to be liberated,” he stated.

Kooagile is a student at the University of Botswana, studying Logistics and supply chain management. His poetry collection, Shattering Shackles will be retailing for P150. He can be contacted @thepoeticgenius on Instagram, Facebook and Tik Tok for more content and updates.
