Excitement is building up ahead of the premier of three locally produced films, Mokwalo, Khumo ya dinaledi and Buying the cow.

The three films will be aired on DStv’s Mzanzi Magic beginning this Saturday. Local cinema is shining bright with the three Botswana films, which will surely capture the richness of local stories. During the press conference hosted by MutliChoice Botswana this week, it became evident that the films will create waves not only for their compelling narratives but also for bringing authentic, home-grown talent to the screen. This is backed by the fact that initially the films were commissioned to be aired on Mzanzi Bioskop channel but because of the quality of the final products, DStv decided to upscale the films to Mzanzi Magic. Each movie explores universal themes of family, ambition, and tradition, while staying true to Botswana’s cultural essence, making them relatable yet distinct for audiences.

Mokwalo is a deeply resonant story about generational conflict and the tension between traditional and modern values. Mokwalo is a 52-minute exploration of grief, loss, and personal growth. The cinematography beautifully captures Botswana’s landscapes, making it visually captivating. Masego Mohwasa, producer, writer and director of Mokwalo, says it was a journey of healing, growth and love. “I hope when everyone is done watching the film, they can reach out to their loved ones and appreciate them more while they are still here”, she added. Khumo ya dinaledi is a light-hearted film about family dynamics. It depicts the life of a college dropout who must rebuild his life after recklessly squandering his inheritance. Khumo ya dinaledi director and writer, Tumelo Chaba says: “The story is about redemption, love, and the influential role of family support in helping us find our way back. It celebrates the bonds that shape and lift us and lead us towards second chances and self-discovery.”

Buying the cow is a drama that tackles the pursuit of marriage against all odds. This film delves into the sacrifices and perseverance a woman had to make to marry the love of her life, who turned out to be uncomfortable with her ways of going about their marriage. This film balances comedic moments with heartfelt scenes, showing the lengths people go to for love. “It’s an honour to share Buying the Cow, a heart-warming tale of misunderstandings, love, resilience and the promise of forever. This film is our love letter to the wisdom of the past and the vibrant relationships of today, reflecting the ever-changing world we call home”, reflected Buying the cow director, Mphonyana Princess Mokokwe. Together, these three films showcase Botswana’s growing film industry and promise an engaging viewing experience for Mzansi Magic audiences.

The elated MultiChoice Botswana managing director, Stephanie Pillay, could not hide her excitement. "We are thrilled to bring these incredible local films to our viewers. Our commitment to local content is unwavering, and we believe these films will inspire and entertain audiences of all ages. By supporting local filmmakers, we are investing in the future of Botswana's creative industry," she said.
