How best can I describe what it was like to have the smell of Belgian Waffles meet and usher me into the location Jasonette Belgian Waffles utilises when in Gaborone?
If you’ve ever watched cartoons, e be o bona Tom and Jerry go apeilwe pie e beilwe by the windowsill, ebe ba ngokiwa ke monkgo wa yone yaana, ke gore nkare ba mo moweng..lol, yes, just like that.
Easy to find, it’s a few houses away from Poso House, the shared location pin took us right to the front door. Signage was visible from outside, so if it wasn’t for the magical wafting smell of fresh bakes directing me, I still would have found it quite easily. I was very excited for the pop up store as I have seen the Facebook page and knew they were based in Palapye.
Since the day I discovered them online months ago, I made a mental note that the very next time I find myself on the A1, Jasonette Belgian Waffles has to be a pit stop. Scrolling through the page trying to get an idea of what to order, one is met by beautiful images of products and the lush venue and garden space in PY. It looks like a super relaxing and therapeutic space.
Established in November 2021, why waffles? One half of the duo responded; we wanted to introduce something new aside from chicken, burgers or fries (mafresh). Waffles allowed for easy creativity implementation. Previous communication was only done via text so I had no idea what to expect.
The name Jasonette sounded French to me, plus they were making Belgian Waffles? I had no idea what to make of it all and went in with an open mind. I was met at the pop up by a young lady, who was very busy and as she disappeared to the back of the house, an equally busy gentleman appeared and introduced himself as the individual on the other end of the phone.
As we got to chatting, a steady flow of excited patrons trickled in to collect phone orders or place orders and wait only a few minutes for their steamy delicious waffles. I was quick to ask about the name, is it French? No.....he giggled, it’s a combination of myself and my eight years long life partner’s names. Jason and Antoinette.
How incredibly clever, the name definitely gives the brand an element of class and quality. Their vision is to grow a big franchise brand becoming a household name in Southern Africa and hopefully take to the world. The restaurant is different because they only sell Belgian Waffles, which are the first of the kind countryside.
They aspire to cater for corporate events, weddings and private parties. Best sellers include everyone's favorite; Chocolate Mess, Caramel Delight and Sweet & Sticky Pizza. Located along the A1 in PY behind Cresta Botsalo/Desert Sand Motel they serve the PY working class and commuters. There is also a high volume of guesthouses who could benefit from waffle packs, for Breakfasts/Desserts in their immediate location. For our review, we ordered Chocolate Mess, Creamy Chicken and Sweet & Sticky Pork Pizza waffles.
They were all delightful! Deep pocket waffles, crispy on the outside and soft in the centre. One concern I had was that the base may get soggy if not consumed immediately but this was not a problem as the waffles keep and travel well in their packaging. I can’t wait to visit the Garden and explore more of the menu. The CreamyC and Sweet & Sticky Pork Pizza waffles were delicious and filling. Segmented into four cuts each, the fluffy waffle is topped with chicken, veg and a creamy sauce.
The pork pizza waffle has brilliantly pulled pork topping with sticky sauce on the waffle, such a versatile way of presenting this confectionery treat. For dessert we had the Chocolate mess, which defies its name as it is a perfectly presented work of art with delicate fine touches. A yummy waffle coated in marshmallows, chocolate crumbs, oreos and chocolate mousse sauce, this is a masterpiece, a chocolate overload that isn’t overwhelmingly sweet. They are definitely onto something amazing at Jasonette.
