Young poet aims to preserve Setswana

The young creative is determined to make history to remember him. This poet from Molepolole describes himself as a committed, responsible and hard working young man.
He is not only a talented poet but Magalaotane is also a Christian motivational speaker and counselor. His ability to play around with Setswana language, which is rich in idioms and phrases has won many people’s hearts. “I was born and groomed in Molepolole. I discovered my talent at a tender age when I was a Standard 6 pupil. By the time I successfully performed during Teacher’s Day celebration, everyone was impressed including the teachers. Being a poet opened opportunities for me. I was invited to perform at many events countrywide and internationally too,” he said.
Additionally, Magalaotane has an intriguing performance record. He performed at different events such as the famous local cultural events, Dithubaruba, Mantlwaneng Cultural Festival, Miss Setso, Maru TV, ABOPSA 2020 competition where he scooped position two and the Gogo La Setso Cultural Festival in 2022.
He explained that poetry was important to him, adding that he intended using it to preserve local culture for the young and upcoming generations. Furthermore, he explained that it was not easy for him being an artist because he depends on events to sustain themselves.
He added that it was important for poets and other artists to support themselves if there were no events. He advised fellow poets and aspiring ones to think outside the box and come with other strategies to make income. He said they could even write poetry books to generate income.
