JWANENG: Marriage wrecking cases have gratly reduced in mining town of Jwaneng’s two kgotlas. Court president Kgosi Mpaesele Itumeleng is a relieved man as he revealed in an interview that they now breathe fresh air. He said for the past two years, more women came to report infidelities of their spouses at the Jwaneng Customary court and Raphalane Kgotla.

Jwaneng, being a mining town, has more men than women and women are bound to share partners. Itumeleng is of the view that some men in Jwaneng are not responsible enough to hold their feelings and stick to one partner which also increases the already high incidence of HIV/AIDS.

In 2014, 10 cases of marriage wrecking were registered and the defendants were convicted and fined whereas in 2015 there were only three cases. This year there have been no cases reported and Itumeleng applauded the community for valuing the essence of marriage and family. The youth are the main perpetrators and are often dragged before the courts and fined accordingly because the complainants usually bring compelling evidence and will seek compensation from the defendants.
