The event, which took place at Kagisong Centre in Mogoditshane, drew a commendable turnout of married couples who are members of the society. Steven Leboro, the guest speaker at the event, addressed a common expression: “Behind every successful man, there is a woman.”
He clarified that according to the Book of Genesis, a woman was created from the rib of a man, symbolising equality and partnership. Leboro emphasised that women are not meant to be subservient to men but are helpers, walking alongside them to complement each other. He highlighted the prevalence of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in marriages, attributing it to the belief that women are inferior and should serve men. He stressed the importance of recognising women as equals in marriage, citing Adam's admiration for Eve as evidence of their partnership.
For her part, Phemelo Mongwato, a marriage counsellor, discussed contributing factors to GBV in marriages. She pointed out conflicts arising from the unequal use of marital resources, such as building projects for one spouse's parents instead of investing in the marriage or children's future. Mongwato further emphasised that marriage means leaving one’s parents and cleave to the wife but not necessarily meaning that one has to dessert the parents. She also addressed issues in blended families, emphasising the need for counselling to help stepchildren adjust and prevent friction within the marriage.
The founder and president of the society, Charity Keobokile-Opelo, explained that the society, established in 2018, was officially registered in August 2023. Its objective is to empower marriages through conferences and provide assistance to women and children affected by GBV in collaboration with other organisations. Among the attendees was Junior Sekolokwane, known as Jujuvine, along with his wife. He served as the director of the ceremony, adding his charm to the evening and contributing to its success. Holy Matrimony Society is open to married couples seeking support and empowerment for their marriages.
Through their events and initiatives, they aim to strengthen relationships and combat GBV, fostering healthier and happier marriages within the community.
