CAPE TOWN: Debswana's ESG (environmental, social, and governance) efforts are aligned with national policies, said former Debswana Head of Safety and Sustainable Development and current De Beers Group Head of Policy and Planning, Tefo Molosiwa

Speaking during a panel discussion at the ongoing Investing in African Mining Indaba, Molosiwa highlighted that Debswana has aligned its ESG policies with national intents and has worked with the government to domesticate the Sustainable Development Goals.

"ESG is not a new phenomenon, it is an example of private partnerships that work. The way government has invested funds in health, education, and the environment shows what partnerships can do," he said.

Molosiwa emphasised the importance of having clear objectives of KPIs and a vision.

“What is also important for us as Debswana is having a system and mechanism of implementation. It is critical to be clear about your vision and KPIs. From an organisational perspective we have an operational model system that helps us to take those KPIs and cascade them into the organisation so that they are integrated into all various functions of the company and you are able to monitor them, " he said.

Furthermore, Molosiwa said Debswana has done the same with its carbon neutrality strategy by partnering with government and other key stakeholders.
