The Botswana Rugby Union (BRU) will hold a golf day next week in Phakalane as part of its fund raising initiative. The event is part of an ambitious bid to raise P6 million for the construction of a new stadium.

BRU president, Bob Lekan told Mmegi Sport that the initial cost of the stadium was P16 million and they intend to bring the figure down. He said they do not want to scare off potential financiers. Lekan said the plan is to conduct an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) on the construction venue with the initial funds raised. He said BRU wants to utilise the 4.6 ha plot allocated by the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) just behind Gaborone Golf Club to build the stadium.

"We need money to develop the land because we spend a lot of money on rental when using other institution's facilities such as Wharic Park or the University of Botswana Stadium. We pay around P2,500 per day when using such facilities when the national teams are in camp. We should be using that money for other things," Lekan explained.
