Concerns of match-fixing emerged after an audio clip featuring the voices believed to be those of referee, Joshua Bondo and BFA official, Monnakgotla Mojaki was leaked recently.
The Ministry of Youth, Sport, Gender and Culture as well as the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) urged the BFA to get to the bottom of the matter. In response, the BFA appointed a three-man committee this week but did not release the names of the members. Amid concerns, the integrity of the committee could be compromised without the public scrutinising their profiles.
The BFA chief executive officer, Mfolo Mfolo said the names could not be released owing to the sensitive nature of the matter. “It is just like Club Licensing committee members. We are not allowed to make them known.
So there will be those exceptions, unfortunately,” Mfolo told Mmegi Sport yesterday. The BFA also allayed fears the matter could be compromised, assuring the committee was made up of people of integrity. “We have appointed a three-man investigatory committee to probe and investigate the widely circulated audio clip attributed to the two BFA officials,” the BFA stated in a statement.
“The committee is independent with varied experiences from football, legal and business sectors, respectively. The committee is expected to deliver a preliminary report within 10 days,” the association added.
Furthermore, the BFA reiterated that “football must always be played within the highest spirit of fairness and integrity underpinned by ethical conduct at all times. We humbly reassure the public and all our stakeholders, including the media of our commitment to this spirit.”
