The Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA) president, Gilbert Khunwane has said his organisation faced a challenging 2022/2023 boxing season. Khunwane was addressing BoBA affiliates at the association's annual general meeting (AGM) held at Sebele on Saturday.

He stated that the association only managed to host two inter-club tournaments because of financial constraints. Khunwane said up to this point they still await 2023/24 grant from the mother body, the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC).

But he expressed gratitude for the sponsorship from Debswana. “The 11th edition of the BoBA awards was held in May 2023. Debswana sponsored the awards to the tune of P412,000, an increase from last year’s P250,000. We would like to thank Debswana for the continued support,” he said.

Francistown Boxing Club coach, Choga Ntoti however expressed his concern over the non-consultation of the coaches commission on the awards. However, Khunwane admitted the mistake and promised that it will be corrected to avoid a communication mishap next time.

The association has been operating without vice president technical, Othusitse Mogotsakgotla, who is still serving suspension since Ascension Day while awaiting a verdict from the disciplinary committee. Meanwhile, the strategy for the years 2023/2024 was presented at the AGM before the affiliates. The strategy has been ready for presentation and awaited adoption since last year due to financial constraints. Through the strategy, recreational boxing will be considered as a way of raising funds for the association.

The strategy also seeks increase the visibility of boxing through interactions with media and stakeholder engagements. At the AGM the president and secretary general, Taolo Tlouetsile both admitted that loss of records is a challenge they are facing. As a strategy, BoBA will improve governance by documenting all policies and processes. Furthermore, they will increase participation by increasing the number of officials, developing coaches, referees, and judges, and also leveraging grassroots development programs.
