MMOPANE: Holy Ghost are the Debswana First Division South league champions and automatically gained promotion to the Botswana Premier League following their 3-1 win over Taung Young Strikers on Saturday afternoon.

The team achieved the new status during the final day fixture played at the Holy Ghost Park. Four minutes into the tie, Teddy Gunda put Holy Ghost in the lead, beating the goalkeeper to the bottom corner. But the home side’s happiness was short lived as on the 14th minute Motsumi nodded one in to draw level.

Ishmael Amponsah tried from range with a powerful effort but it was well saved by the keeper on 21st minute. Amponsah was a thorn on the opposition’s defense on the afternoon as on the 33rd minute he had another go at goal but was once again denied by the goalkeeper.

The two sides went into the break level at 1-1. Eight minutes into the second half, Amponsah shot wide off the post and two minutes later his lowly taken effort was once again wide off the post. Amponsah’s moment finally came on the hour mark as he beat the goalkeeper to the bottom corner to give the home side the lead. Nine minutes later the striker got his double. His initial shot was parried back into play and fell unto Kgomotso Kgopegang’s path.

He laid his pass to Amponsah and the striker slotted in to the empty net. On the 76th minute Thabang Khuduga came near but his effort was saved. The home side held on to the 3-1 lead to be crowned DFDS champions at full time. “I think (since) the last two games there has been a lot of talk, a lot of doubt. But I have always said the problem is not us. It is officiating but we are here now and we are very happy. It has been a long journey, when I got here I knew with the quality we have here, they will be no reason why we should not gain promotion. We are now going to the highest level of football and things have to change,” Holy Ghost’s Oupa Kowa said after the match.
