Gaborone United (GU) has recently experienced ill-discipline with two players suspended from duty. On Tuesday, the Reds issued a statement indicating defender Kennedy Amutenya and forward Onkabetse Makgantai had been suspended for disciplinary reasons.

The club did not reveal much about the suspensions but MmegiSport has been informed that Amutenya was involved in a fight in training. The hard-tackling Namibian defender is said to have come to blows with winter signing, Poloko Nkalolang, after a training session last week Wednesday.

"Amutenya fought with Nkalolang after training last Wednesday.

It was just an incident on the field of play then one of the two players decided to fight. They were both involved, so everyone is asking why only Amutenya is suspended. Amutenya then decided not to train the following day and this was before the (suspension) decision was taken or called for a hearing.

He (Amutenya) has since left all GU (WhatsApp groups) this week," a source told MmegiSport. On the other hand, Makgantai is said to have been AWOL from training since the team returned from the CAF Confederation Cup assignment in Polokwane a fortnight ago. The player is said to have returned to duty on Tuesday and offered no reason for his absence.

Amutenya and Makgantai were missing in the opening weekend of the 2023-2024 Botswana Premier League (BPL) as GU played to a 0-0 away draw against Nico United. Reached for comment, GU's marketing and communications manager, Herbert Letsebe said the matter is handled internally and a decision will be taken shortly. "Yes, we have suspended Kennedy Amutenya and Onkabetse Makgantai due to disciplinary issues but just like we said in our communication on Facebook, we cannot comment further than this.

The issue is being attended to and soon it will be solved." "We have a code of conduct in which everybody, whether you are a player, official, coach (you have to follow), and if anybody associated with the club contravenes the code of conduct of GU, action will be taken against you. This time around these two players have contravened the code of conduct and action will be taken against them," Letsebe told MmegiSport on Wednesday. This publication has been further informed that GU's general manager, Tebogo Mothusi tendered his resignation on Tuesday evening. "Nobody knows what his reasons are but he handed the resignation letter to (club director, Nicholas) Zakhem on Tuesday evening. GU has held off the announcement of the resignation because they believe he might have a change of heart.

He is someone whose heart is close to GU and if he comes back, it might be after the international break," the source said. Letsebe was, however, quick to shoot down the reports as he said the club is not aware of Mothusi's departure as he assured there is calm at the club. "The team is back, we played our first game in Phikwe and everything is fine.

Currently, we have a challenge of injuries to our key players. This FIFA week is a blessing in disguise. The players will recover and by the time we return, we will have all the players. So there is no need to panic. So I can assure our supporters that we will challenge for honours. We want to go back to CAF; we have unfinished business in CAF," Letsebe said. Meanwhile, The Reds will convene a special general meeting tomorrow at the Gaborone Technical College (GTC) although it is unclear what the agenda is.
