The Gaborone United (GU) special general meeting held at Gaborone Technical College (GTC) on Saturday attracted a low number of supporters, much to the disappointment of the executive committee.

The meeting discussed a wide range of issues including the introduction of the membership funeral scheme through its partnership with Bank Gaborone. The gathering only attracted a few supporters including some branch leaders although it was open to every supporter.

Speaking at the gathering, the club’s secretary-general, Pelonomi Bantsi, was disappointed and urged the general membership to work together to take the club forward. “Numbers don't lie. There is a problem when you see such a low number of people in this meeting, which did not require membership cards to attend. I am not happy. We need to do things properly.

As supporters’ branch leadership, you fail to differentiate between the executive committee and yourselves. You want to run the team, which is wrong. Tomorrow when things do not go well, who are you going to blame?” Bantsi said.

He said currently GU has the best squad and very capable of winning both the league and the Orange FA Cup but warned that if things are not done properly, the results on the field will not be positive. Meanwhile, the supporters were introduced to the membership schemes presented by Bank Gaborone staff. Bank Gaborone are the main sponsors of the Orange FA Cup champions.

They introduced four funeral schemes named after the late former captain, Joseph Phetogo, Wiseman Lesole, Lele Sebele and Willie Seboni. Club chairperson, Boitumelo Nsunge emphasised the importance of the Bank Gaborone sponsorship and said the club should do all it can to protect it.

“It is not easy getting such kind of money considering that even our league is struggling to find financial backers. We should protect this relationship,” he said.
