A tug of war between Gaborone United (GU) and Matebele over striker Thabo Maponda has been resolved after the two sides announced a truce today, Friday.

In a joint statement, the two Premier League sides said they have reached an amicable agreement concerning the matter, after they were at loggerheads, for some time with each side claiming the player belonged to them. GU had stated the player had signed a pre-contract with the club while Matebele on the other hand were quick to counter their rival’s statement. Matebele had claimed Maponda remained their player until 2026, leading to counter accusations between the two clubs for couple of months. However, they have since released a joint statement confirming that they have reached a common ground and the player will don the red and white shirt this season.

GU have also since confirmed that the player will be available for selection against city rivals, Township Rollers, this evening when the FNB Premiership kicks off. “Gaborone United and Matebele Football club are pleased to announce that an amicable agreement has been reached concerning the matter involving player, Thabo Maponda,” the two clubs said in a joint statement. “Both clubs have engaged in constructive dialogue and have come to a mutual understanding, which resolves the issue in the best interest of all parties.”
