Local tennis player, Mark Nawa is out to improve his ranking at the ongoing J4 ITF Under-18 boys tournament in Namibia.

Nawa is part of a team that has Esi Molefe and Nina Sekonopo, who failed to progress in the early rounds.

Molefe lost his first round match to Johannes Petrus Van Wijk of South Africa 0-6, 1-6, which ended his journey in the tournament. Sekonopo equally found the going tough when he went down to Claire Jaramba 0-6, 2-6.

Nawa has been the standout performer and was due to play sixth seed, South African Calum Jestin in the quarterfinal yesterday. The Botswana player has made remarkable progress since the beginning of the tour to improve his rankings.

Nawa is the tournament's fourth seed and made impressive progress in the tournament. He won his first-round match against Dian Calitz of Namibia 6-3, 6-1. He went on to win his second-round match 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 against Marshall Hullet of South Africa. The second-round win set up yesterday's quarterfinal showdown against Jestin.

Botswana Tennis Association president, Oaitse Thipe was full of praise for Nawa.

"He is doing really well and his rankings have improved in international tennis. If he keeps this up, he could play Junior Grand slams next year," Thipe said.

Nawa is currently ranked 698 in the world and will reach position 600 with his current results at the J4 Windhoek Under-18 tournament. The Grand Slams are the Junior US Open, Junior Wimbledon, Junior Australian Open and the Junior French Open.

Nawa has had an impressive 2021 where he won the doubles title in the 2021 Africa Junior Championships in Tunisia. He was paired with Denzel Seetso.

He made the quarterfinals of the J4 Gaborone 2022 Tennis Tournament where he beat Yoan Nandenov of Bulgaria in the third round 6-3, 6-3. He recently played in Harare in a team competition and even though Botswana failed to make the Junior Davis Cup and the Billie Jean Cup tournaments in Turkey have not stopped Nawa from working hard and thriving for a higher ranking.
