Football remains the country's most popular sport, athletics is the most successful whilst motorsport keeps breaking new grounds. But in the midst of all, table tennis has emerged as the best sports federation. The code won the National Sport Association of the Year award at last week's Botswana National Sports Awards. MmegiSport Correspondent, KABELO BORANABI traces the minority sport's rise to be the country's best following this historic achievement.

The marathon returns to Selebi-Phikwe on July 26 following last year's absence. Announcing the deal this week, Orange Botswana CEO, Néné Maïga, stated that the renewed partnership marks a turning point for the Phikwe National Marathon as this year’s edition has recorded an increase in the sponsorship money. “This does not only mark the return of one of Botswana’s anticipated sporting events but it also signals the beginning of the journey that continues to bring people together to inspire excellence and uplift the town of Selebi-Phikwe,” Maïga said.

Maïga indicated that the relationship between the two dates back to 2016 where Orange proudly stood alongside the Selebi-Phikwe Town Council and the local organising committee to be what it is today. With renewed hopes and aspirations as the event was not held last year, Maïga stated that Orange is in a race to turn the 2025 edition into one of the best marathons they have ever held. “At Orange we love sports, we love athletics, and we commit P1 million annually from this year to 2027 and this is an increase in sponsorship as it reflects a much stronger business position and how big we want to do this,” she said. In addition, Maïga stated that the increase in sponsorship money would also reflect in the prize monies for the winners on the day. “We have increased the prize monies and unlike before we have included the five kilometre race amongst the races that will have a prize money,” Maïga said. Although she has signalled that there will be an increase in prize money, she said they are yet to sit down and establish what will be the value of the prizes on the day.
